A New Hope
The only thing that I want to write about today is what everybody in the country (and around the world, even) is talking about. We have elected Barack Obama as our next President! In some ways this has barely sunk in for me yet. As a new stay at home mom, my days don’t exactly revolve around current events. I find all my attention is usually caught up in my daughter and keeping our household running at least somewhat smoothly. So last night, as my husband stayed up late to watch the election results unfolding on TV, I went to bed at my usual ten o’clock bedtime so that I would have the energy to get up in the middle of the night to feed Sweet Pea and get up with her at a decent hour this morning. But I did turn on NPR and listen to the good news as I fell asleep.
For my daughter’s sake, I’ve been praying that Barack Obama would get elected. Eight years ago, during the fiasco that was the election of George W. Bush, I was living in Europe. I watched the run-up to the election with amusement, sure that there was no way Bush could be elected when he couldn’t even pronounce “subliminal” correctly. I assured my European friends that if he was elected, I would stay where I was. Somehow he got into office and I did return to the United States, but I will not deny that for the last eight years I have sometimes been ashamed of the actions taken by my homeland.
I know that Barack Obama is only a man. But I also know that right now he is our best hope for turning around and beginning to correct so many of the mistakes we’ve made as a nation. So God bless Barack Obama as he starts out on his journey as leader of these United States of America.
